Florence Broadhurst Hand Woven Rugs released in Australia by Cadrys
In the 60s, the flamboyant Florence Broadhurst would take the daily stroll from her studio in Paddington, Sydney, often stopping along the way to chat with Jacques Cadry, the founder of Cadrys hand woven carpets. Florence had an obvious love for textiles and design and would talk for hours about her latest screen prints while Jacques would share his latest silk rug treasures from the exotic East and beyond.
Fast forward four decades and the kindred spirit of Florence and Jacques has been reignited though a new collaboration between Signature Prints, custodians of the Florence Broadhurst design library and Cadrys.
Quotes David Lennie of Signature Prints:
“When Signature Prints first approached Cadrys we were looking for the best of the best – a high end specialist in rug design with a thorough understanding of this iconic library was a must for taking the designs into a new medium.
The Florence Broadhurst designs are so extraordinary because of their ability to be translated. It is awe inspiring to see a design such as Japanese Floral transform from a wallpaper to a printed fabric to a jacquard fabric and now – to hand woven rugs.”
Quotes Bob Cadry of Cadrys:
“Inspired by the opportunity to work with Australia’s most famous prints and designs, we began to research the extensive Broadhurst archives. After much deliberation we selected ten designs, each chosen for their diversity, unique visual language and their ability to connect the old with the new.”
Hand-woven in Nepal in a traditional manner, the pieces will feature Tibetan handspun wool, hemp, nettle, bamboo silk and luscious pure silk. Cut and loop pile, along with soumak kelim weaving techniques will be used to create a unique accent and texture.
The Florence Broadhurst collection by Cadrys features Japanese Floral, Siam, Honeycomb, Japanese Bamboo, Circles & Squares, Floral 300, Kabuki, Solar, Turnabout and Horses. Customised sizes and colourations are also available.
Florence Broadhurst hand woven rugs by Cadrys will be released in the USA in early 2009.
