Indian Royalty And Florence Broadhurst Make The Front Page

The heir to the world’s oldest continuous royal dynasty, the Maharaja Kumar Sahib Lakshyaraj Singhji Mewar of Udaipur, featured on the front page of leading Australian newspaper the Sydney Morning Herald on June 7, 2005.

Studying for his hospitality degree in Australia, Lakshyaraj, was photographed in front of Florence Broadhurst Japanese Floral wallpaper at Sumac, a new Middle Eastern restaurant in Sydney.

It’s a fitting combination, as Florence travelled to India in the 1930s as part of her singing and dancing troupe. She was also no stranger to royalty, being a friend of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who, when on a royal visit to Sydney, noticed Florence in the crowd and was reported by a local paper as saying, “fancy seeing you here, how about a quick gin?”.

Lakshyaraj is the son of the Maharana of Mewar who owns nine luxury hotels in the Indian state of Rajasthan, the most famous being the Lake Palace Hotel which, as its name suggests, is both a former royal palace and romantically situated in the centre of a lake – and has even featured in a James Bond film.
